FirstLook
Masterpiece Models has released five 1/72 scale bases for armour and
vehicle kits in solid resin. All five are different shapes - round,
oval, square, rectangular and pentagonal. They vary in size and they
all have “features” such as hills, banks, drop-offs and one, the
rectangular one, although flat, has a culvert running along side a
road. They all have vehicle tread marks, both tracked and wheeled,
and some have foot prints, small shell holes or rocks, large and
small.
The interesting thing about these bases is that they could all be
used in desert scenes (sand and rock), European winter (snow and
mud) or European summer (grass and earth) depending on how you paint
them. Three of them would only take one vehicle but the other two
are big enough for two or more.

The only challenge I can see is you
will have to be careful to match your model to the tread marks on
the base. It would look a bit dopey to have a Tiger on a base
leading away from skinny little tank tracks or wheel marks.
Casting quality is very impressive with no pin holes or other
imperfections evident. Most bases will require a small amount of
clean-up around the lower edges and two. The square and rectangular
examples could possibly use a timber surround if you are that way
inclined.
A few years ago, the now defunct Hawkeye Designs did some similar
bases for 1/72 scale aircraft, Luftwaffe timber hard stands and
Allied PSP hard stands etc. They were beautifully detailed yet
simple enough that they didn't distract from the model.
These new Armour bases have the same qualities.
(Footnote: The models are used
here to indicate scale and the size of the bases, not necessarily
historical context!)
Highly Recommended.
Thanks to
Masterpiece Models for the review sample.
